North /Northwest Reno
Much of the activities, events, recreation, and housing in this area are centered around the University of Nevada Reno (UNR), and the Downtown core, including St. Mary’s and Renown Hospitals, and the Casinos. This area is home to students, faculty members, professors, medical workers, casino employees, and office professionals. With easy access to the freeways (I-80, McCarran Loop, and I-395/580 ), this area is extremely popular and is comprised of its own varied culture. Within several blocks of the University you will find older, well-worn brick and wood homes where students have resided over the decades while attending school.
North of the University, called appropriately University Ridge, you will find newer stucco homes, some with great views of the city downtown area and the off in the distance mountains. Just Northeast of UNR, San Rafael is a large 600+ popular park for walking, dog playing, mountain biking and Reno’s Great Balloon Race held in Sept. Homes in this area are very popular due to the close proximity to the campus and park and freeways. Though mostly older, many have been renovated in recent years.
Further west of the University, is an area called Old Northwest. Many of the homes in this area were built in the 1960’s, have larger lots, and have been through renovations over the years. Here you will find streets that curve around, lots of cul-de-sacs, and often crowded and narrow streets as was the theme back then. Old Northwest runs into New Northwest as one travels farther west, past McCarran Loop, and then into the Somersett area. The homes for the most part are newer the farther west you go from the University.
Mogul and Verdi are two communities that are located west of Somersett and closer to the California state border. Mogul is approximately 5 miles, whereas Verdi is on the California border and is approximately 10 miles from the Reno center. Both are considered mature and rural neighborhoods, many with large acreage lots, zoned for horses, and some with nice river & mountain views. In recent years, custom home and parcel sales have been on the rise.
